Mom Self-Care?

So is it me or are other moms and I alike? So this morning I went to the dentist. This was an appointment just for me. It’s honestly a little embarrassing to admit, but I haven’t really been consistent with my dental care, or overall physical care at that matter. But not a single one of my kiddos missed an appointment, had prolonged gaps in medical care, or skipped a dental cleaning. I constantly fight to ensure I book appointments that do not interrupt with their schooling, as well ensuring I have the funds to pay for their needs. For example, my oldest just got braces last month as well as my youngest needing hearing aids and having to afford the costs molds AND the actually hearing aid.

Back in February I told myself I need to make sure I take care of my medical needs as well. I’ve been blessed to not have many ailments, but more preventative things like dental cleaning, physicals with my primary, etc. So I made my dental appointment and had it this morning. I was nervous not just because I don’t like the dentist, but more because of my decade long stretch of lacking routine care. I was scared they would take one peek in my mouth and just know it was a hazard zone of neglect.

They attempted to reassure me that it was not as bad as it could be and we came up with my treatment plan. Keep in mind I have a few random issues, cavities, a root canal I never got crowned etc. All of these things needing to be fixed for around $800 after insurance. They were super nice and accommodating ensuring I booked all my appointments and gave me prices per appointment per my request just so I could budget accordingly.

Now I say all of that to say, us moms and parents really need to make sure that we practice what we preach when we teach our children self care and the many forms it comes in. We make big deals about getting our kids to the doctor and their appointments and we need to make sure we have the same enthusiasm for our own care. I have literally gone a decade putting off my health and preventive care which may be a more costly mistake health wise and financially. Be better than me guys. If you can’t remember the last time you saw your primary, make an appointment. If you have insurance, look at your policy and see what all is covered at 100% and go see everyone it lists! Our babies worlds depend on us, we have to make sure we are taking care our ourselves!

***P.S.***

I know some may not want to hear it…..but your OB is not your primary lol! Thats the only person I’ve consistently seen through the years and they can only do/refer so much! lol
